Dancers bring “A Touch of Polynesia” to Cypress Festival

Rose Cason, director and choreographer of “A Touch of Polynesia,” and her colorfully-costumed dancers bring the exotic dances of central and southern Pacific Ocean indigenous peoples to Oak Knoll Park in Cypress.

The colorful costumes reflect the beautiful colors of nature found in Polynesia.

Polynesia embraces more than a thousand islands separated by hundreds of miles of open ocean but united by culture, including dance styles like the hula from Hawaii and Tahitian dance from French Polynesia. Dancers use their arms and hands as a way of communicating through dance.

Both Polynesian men and women dance as a social activity, but the choreography for males and females often differ strikingly.

Come and enjoy “A Touch of Polynesia” performing dances from Hawaii, Tahiti and New Zealand on the Cypress Festival main stage at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 28.

Cypress Church Brings Help to a Hurting World

God has a life-journey mapped out for each one of us us and He has custom built into us abilities, talents, gifts, passions, desires, dreams, and interests to engage as part of His specific plans. "We are seeking out ways to help the needs in Cypress and the eleven cities that surround it," says Pastor Mike McKay about the church’s desire to help the poor. "We have also looked beyond our borders, connecting with local churches and organizations in different countries to give some tangible expressions of God*s love."

The theme at Cypress Church for 2012 is: "It's Your Serve." This summer members of the Cypress Church congregation are fanning out to serve others around the globe. Chante Longshore is training in Indiana during June and will then tour the East Coast with an evangelistic singing team. J.P. Delmundo has recently gone to Hawaii and will be serving with the The University of Nations (also known as YWAM - Kona). Our Mexico team, which includes the McElderry and Punkay families are building a home for a needy family in Mexico this June.

In early July, Jessica Bujarski will be serving as an intern in Ecuador. On July 16th she will be joined by a team of 15 including the Peterson family and volunteers from four Orange County churches to assist the Waodani Tribe by holding a jungle style Vacation Bible School.

Cypress Church Senior Pastor Mike McKay and his wife Kristi will lead this year's India team. They will travel to the Andhra Pradesh region to minister to orphans and take food to a leper colony. 25 high school students from the congregation will travel to New Orleans starting on July 21 to work with Urban Impact Ministries and Castle Rock Church.

Cypress Church is committed to serving people all around the globe and in our local area in the name of Jesus and the community is invited to participate. Sabrina Lentini to Shine at Cypress Festival

A magnetic performer, Sabrina Lentini pulls her audience into her passionate and heartfelt music, plumbing depths greater than seem possible for a singer/songwriter too young to drive.

It takes many people a long time to find their path in life, or have the courage to embrace it, but it’s utterly apparent that young Sabrina is already being true to hers. Last fall, Sabrina appeared on The HUB Network series called “Majors and Minors,” a reality TV show chronicling the journeys of twelve talented young musicians chosen out of a pool of 40,000. Climb Aboard Peter Brandon's Song-Filled Heartfelt Ride

Country entertainer and songwriter Peter Brandon will perform on the Cypress Community Festival Main Stage at 1:30 p.m. Brandon, a well-established musician and true showman, has so far produced three studio albums and many recordings. Brandon's live shows are full of energy and surprises — his songs yank the audience along an emotional roller coaster that connects in a very genuine way.

The title track of Brandon's second album, "Drive Real Fast," was a career breakout. The single received national radio airplay and was nominated for many awards including an LA Music Award for Song of the Year. It was also featured in many NASCAR Sprint Cup race commercials and in partnerships with fourteen-time Funny Car Champion John Force.

Beyond his many concert appearances, Brandon cherishes chances to reach out to help those in need together with organizations that include Finally Home Foundation, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, OC Walk to Remember, GINA for Missing Persons and John Force's ChiPS for Kids.

"There is nothing like the thrill of performing live and sharing my music with others," says Brandon. "I have a great group of friends that have a blast making music together. Oral Artist Preshenda Hooked by Storytelling

As an eight-year-old, Preshenda listened in wide-eyed wonder to her grandfather’s tale of a fishing trip in deep waters, when his hook became tangled in a mermaid’s hair.

“I still wonder,” Preshenda says, “if that mermaid was real, or just good old-fashioned storytelling!”
Preshenda studied political science in college — but she changer her life’s direction when she decided that her family’s heritage of storytelling had to be carried on.

Her grandfather’s gift of tale-spinning was matched by fabulous stories from other family members that called out wide-eyed wonder and curiosity in generations of children.

Preshenda has expanded that audience beyond her family, to embrace thousands of children across decades of storytelling.

And at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, Preshenda will delight children, parents and grandparents with her storytelling at the “Corral” Stage in the children’s ride area at this year’s Cypress Festival.
Families with young children — and anyone who’s young at heart and open to wonder — will want to take time to be captured by the spirit of story!

This year’s event is the 32nd annual Cypress Festival, the largest single-day community festival in Orange County. Held at Oak Knoll Park in Cypress, the day’s events start early with a City-sponsored 5k/10k run/walk that starts and ends just west of the park. The Kiwanis wield spatulas to serve a five-dollar pancake breakfast inside the Cypress Community Center on the grounds of the park.

Winners of a kid’s coloring contest will be announced during the Festival. Chili and salsa cooks will sweat over hot stoves to prove who has The Bestest Hottest Stuff. Proud car owners will show off classics, muscles, and roadsters. More booths that you can shake a stick at will allow vendors of all sizes and non-profits of all stripes to meet and greet Festival visitors.

17th Annual Cypress Car Show Plays on Heart Strings of Car Lovers

Car lovers will swoon over the 17th Annual Cypress Car Show, a big part of this year's Cypress Community Festival on Saturday, July 28.

Visitors will be able to walk right up to a wide variety of dreams-on-wheels such as street cars from eras gone by, muscle cars, Corvettes, classics, trucks, vintage vehicles and sports cars.

Owners are on site and usually available to answer questions.

Proud vehicle owners can display their pride and joy at this year's Car Show for a mere $15 entry fee. Visiting car lovers may be sorely tested — forced to choose among their heart's desires — if they take part in the voting for a Best of Show or Sponsor's award.

For the 2010 Car Show, both awards were given to 1941 Willys — one owned by Tim Avila, the other by Bob Caverley. The community is invited to Oak Knoll Park in Cypress to enjoy not only the Car Show but many other family-oriented Festival activities that include rides, games, food, vendors, and much more.

The Show is organized by the Friends of Cypress Recreation and Parks, Inc., a non-profit benefit corporation.

Gimme Some of that Hot Stuff

Calling all chili and salsa aficionados! Next month the Cypress Community Festival — the biggest one-day festival in Orange County! — will be holding its 32nd Chili Cook-off and Salsa Contest. Hundreds of people come to taste the best homemade chili and salsa in town.

Got a winning chili or salsa recipe — or both? An application packet with all the necessary information may be downloaded from the Cypress Community Festival website at http://www.cypressfestival.com/. Be sure to mail your entry by Wednesday, July 11. Make your check payable to the "Friends of Cypress Recreation and Parks, Inc."

All proceeds from entry fees for the Chili Cook-off and Salsa Contest benefit the many projects the Friends group supports. In the past, projects have included building baseball score booths, dugouts, and redesign of City parks to meet the needs of diverse users.

Do you represent a business or “for-profit entity?” If so, the Orange County Health Department requires that you fill out and turn in a Craven Exemption along with your entry form. This written declaration stipulates that you will receive no monetary benefit other than that resulting from recognition of your participation in this event.

Everyone is invited to join the fun and vote for their favorite “hot stuff.” Taster’s Choice Ballots go on sale at 12 noon on Festival day. For $4 you get a brown bag holding a plastic spoon, a ballot, and a pin-on judge’s ribbon.

Ballot packages sell out fast! Don't wait to buy your ballot package or you could lose out on voting!
Once you've made your decision on the tastiest chili and snappiest salsa, turn your ballot in to be counted. Ballots will be tallied beginning about 3 p.m. Winners of the Chili Cook-off and Salsa Contest are scheduled to be announced from a nearby stage by 4 p.m.

Early Bird Registration Open for Heroes: Arise VBS for Kids

Kids will have loads of fun during Vacation Bible School at Cypress Church to be held the week of July 16 - 20. The theme for 2012 is "Heroes: Arise."

This year's program includes Bible lessons, skits, games, crafts, snacks and music. Children will be keeping an eye out for ways that God works in their everyday lives.

They may even notice the daily demonstrations of His love that are often overlooked. Children will also discover how they can be "Heroes" by showing Christ’s love to others through their actions.
The program is supervised by trained leaders.

"Early Bird" Registration is now open for "Heroes: Arise" Vacation Bible School at Cypress Church. The cost is $20 per child through July 1, 2012. The normal cost is $30 after July 1st. The program is designed for children from age 4 through 6th grade.

Community-minded Southland Credit Union Sponsors Cypress Festival

Southland Credit Union strengthened its sterling reputation for community support by stepping out as a sponsor for the Cypress Community Festival at the gold level.

The company's support of the local community can be seen not only in its gold sponsorship of the Cypress Festival but also in its holiday display of a monumental American flag on the boulevard-side of its landmark glass-walled headquarters building at 10701 Los Alamitos Blvd., opposite Ganahl Lumber in Los Alamitos.

Southland recently completed a make-over of its ground floor branch office that included installation of a photo mosaic legacy wall featuring historical photos of local people and sights.

Cypress Concert Series Features Tom Nolan Band June 16

On Saturday, June 16, the Tom Nolan Band will be in Cypress!  Tom Nolan Band is an institution on the southern California music scene. They have been playing together for over 15 years. The band’s musical mission is to spread positivism and to make people get up and dance.

Tom says, “We’re all about fun and community. We play to help people forget their troubles, break a sweat, and get in the groove.  Tom Noland band’s live shows include a mix of classic soul, blues, jazz, and their own original tunes. If you like to dance, this is the show for you!

The Cypress Concerts on the Green begin at 6:00pm and are free to all in attendance and are held at the Cypress Civic Center Green at 5275 Orange Avenue, two blocks west of Valley View Street.

Free parking is available at the Civic Center parking lot. Handicapped parking is provided behind the Cypress Branch Library near the concert site. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs, picnic blankets and other outdoor accessories to help enjoy music under a canopy of shade trees. Please do not set up any chairs or blankets before Friday at 2:00pm.

Snoopy to Visit Cypress Festival Again This Year

Kids (and their parents) who remember Snoopy visiting the Cypress Festival last year can eagerly look forward to 2012's Festival — Knott's Berry Farm will again provide a visit from Snoopy as part of their Bronze sponsorship. Snoopy will ride over from Camp Snoopy, opened in 1983 at Knott's, an innovation in the amusement park industry — the first theme park area designed specifically for kids.

Knott's Berry Farm, the original theme park, is a strong community supporter dating from its founding in 1920, when Walter Knott bought ten acres of farmland. One thing followed another, including the establishment of his wife's Chicken Dinner Restaurant and the development of the boysenberry as a basis for pies and jams, until Walter decided something had to be done to occupy the big crowds waiting for a seat at the restaurant.

So Walter built the Gold Trails Hotel in what would come to be Ghost Town, the first of six themed areas in the park. And admission was free!

The Knott family sold the business to Cedar Fair LP in 1997, sixteen years after Walter's death. (His wife Cordelia had died in 1974 at the age of 84.)

Knott's Berry Farm is located at 8039 Beach Blvd. in Buena Park, just south of the 91 and 5 Freeways. Its iconic structures, such as the Supreme Scream tower and Ghost Rider wooden roller coaster, are well known to those living and working nearby.

Register Now for the 31st Annual Cypress 5K and 10K Run/Walk

Whether you’re a runner or walker, come check out this amazing race and get ready for some good ol’ fashioned summertime fun!

Registration for the 31st Annual Cypress 5K & 10K Run/Walk is underway! The Race will be held Saturday, July 28, start time 7:30am at the Cypress Civic Center, 5275 Orange Ave.

The City of Cypress Recreation and Community Services has again teamed up with the locally based Cancer Support Foundation. Participants can help cancer patients and their families right here in our community.  Hundreds are helped every year through support groups, financial help, rides to treatment and many other vital services. To contribute, race participants can add a donation to their registration or call the Foundation at (562) 799-3131.

This All-American, small town certified race course includes electronic timing.  Prize money will be awarded to the top three overall finishers in the 10K for both male and female, as well as age division medals for both the 5K & 10K races. Post Race Awards will take place at the Race Finish Line. Immediately following the awards, just one block away, visit the Cypress Community Festival, which features 200 vendors, live entertainment, and a beer garden.

Over 1400 participants are expected to run in this fast & flat certified course, an additional 300 are expected to take part in the 5K Walk, taking place on the same course at the same time as the Run. The walk is a recreational, non-competitive, untimed event offered to include involvement of those who do not wish to run.

Brewer Boys Slated to Entertain at Cypress Festival:

Nathan and Justin Brewer, known as “The Brewer Boys” are slated to entertain on the Main Stage at this summer’s Cypress Community Festival. These singing brothers from Temecula, California offer a fresh perspective on a variety of musical genres.

The boys’ music style has been aptly dubbed as “Alternative Bluegrass” or “newgrass.” Their career started when they performed at school plays and community events. But the duo really took off after they auditioned for a national singing competition “Can You Duet” in Nashville, Tennessee in 2008.

One of the brother’s biggest achievements to date was their involvement with the first season of the X-Factor USA in 2011 where they moved up to the Top 17 under the group category. They were heard by millions around the globe during their live show as part of this event.  Their CD album “Rising” was released in December of 2011.

Carol Fafara, the Entertainment Director for the Cypress Community Festival, has scheduled The Brewer Boys to entertain for the community on Saturday, July 28th at Oak Knoll Park. They will play on the Main Stage of the Festival starting at 3:00 p.m. There will be many other performers all day long on the Festival’s four stages.

This will be the 32nd year for the Festival which is the signature event for the City of Cypress. As many as 30,000 area residents are expected at the event. Cypress Concerts on the Green Series Begins Saturday June 9

On Saturday, June 9th, Sounds of Cypress Orchestra will be the first for nine 2012 Concerts on the Green performances and will be  performing “Hit Parade”, a pops concert of #1 hits from the 40’s through today.  Highlights will include hits from your favorite musicals, films, television, and popular songs.  This is a concert for the entire family that is filled with a variety of music for all.

We will be giving out free giveaway items to both adults and children on Saturday, June 9th!! Supplies are limited.

Concerts begin at 6:00pm and are held at the Cypress Civic Center.  Concerts are free to all in attendance.  Free parking is available at the Civic Center parking lot.  Handicapped parking is provided behind the Cypress Branch Library near the concert site. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs, picnic blankets and other outdoor accessories to help enjoy music under a canopy of shade trees but are asked to not set up until Friday at 2:00pm.  Refreshments are available from local community service organizations for a small charge.  Patrons are reminded that no alcoholic beverages are allowed on City property.

In keeping with its tradition of community involvement, UnitedHealthcare will be a Platinum Sponsor for the 2012 Cypress Festival.
